Rice Business Plan Competition 2011

The Rice Business Plan Competition is the wealthiest bp competition in the world. This year they had a total of $1,2M in price money. And the winning group would walk away with almost $500K. We were lucky to be invited to act as guest judges on the elevator pitch competition and were invited to observe and learn from all the presentations throughout the weekend. Out of approx. 520 applicants, 42 were accepted to be part of the competition. There are several different awards, best elevator pitch, best life science, best IT and a lot of different awards. The main competition consists of three rounds; main round, semifinals and finals. In the finals there are six different companies from different industries. The winner this year was TNG Pharmaceuticals, that had made a vaccine for cows to make them resistant to horn flies. These flies drain the cows blood, almost like mosquitoes and is a serious problem in Texas.

We spent the last weekend in Austin, the capital of Texas. Anders, Christian, Asbjørn, Cecilie and me left in one car early saturday morning. Austin has about the same population as Oslo, and feels much more european than Houston. Nice buildings and alot of nice sights! Check out the pictures:
